A Tale of Two Gardens by Norah Burgess & Danae Kindness
An exceptionally beautiful book, A Tale of Two Gardens details the back and forth correspondence between two Irish gardeners captured in the Limerick Leader Lifestyle section from 1999 to 2001. The column was not the 'expert gardener' approach found in other publications but took the form of letters between these gardening friends.
In 2007, Kindness was diagnosed with breast cancer and although she had an excellent recovery, the disease eventually returned and she died in January of 2016. It was during a visit in 2015 from Burgess that both women came upon the idea to publish an edited version of their column in book form, to bring to life their correspondence. Kindness had self-published a book already and knew what was involved. The result is a beautifully produced book with excellent photography mostly from Burgess. The book was finished 5 days before Danae Kindness passed away, with the proceeds of the first printing going to the Marie Curie Hospice in Belfast and the Carlow Kilkenny Home Care Team as Kindness requested.
Fionnuala Fallon in The Irish Times said: "A Tale of Two Gardens is lovely, poignant, informative and elegantly written." Signed by the co-author Norah Burgess.
